System Requirements
Internet Connection
Absolute minimum is a DSL connection with 128k upstream to upload results. A downstream of 1024kBit is recommended, less may work. If you are on a dialup line I'm sorry, this will take forever.
Hardware
CPU
To provide enough power to render you need a CPU supporting SSE2. This are (as far as I know) all CPUs by Intel and AMD starting from 2004.
A list of supported CPUs (not complete):
- AMD
- AMD K8-based CPUs (Athlon 64, Sempron 64, Turion 64, etc)
- AMD Phenom CPUs
- Intel
- Intel NetBurst-based CPUs (Pentium 4, Xeon, Celeron, Celeron D, etc)
- Intel Pentium M and Celeron M
- Intel Core-based CPUs (Core Duo, Core Solo, etc)
- Intel Core 2-based CPUs (Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Quad, etc)
- Intel Core i7
- Intel Atom (some of the Atom CPUs are a bit weak, so you might not use some of these)
- Transmeta Efficeon
- VIA C7, Nano
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSE2#CPUs_supporting_SSE2 for more info.
RAM
At least 512 MB should be installed in your system. The VM needs at least 256MB plus some memory for the Java GUI and your OS.
Hard Disk
In short: with 4GB free disk space before installing you are on the safe side.
You need space to download the setup files and install VMware Player, the Java GUI and the virtual machine. The setup files consume about 400MB. All installed files require about 2.5 GB. As the client has an automatic update feature that downloads and installs new versions you need some space left for this. So on the long term about 2.5 GB will be used.
OS
Windows
All editions of Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 should work. Please install all updates and service packs.
Linux
coming soon
Mac OS
is planned, stop by from time to time
Other Software
You may get problems if you have another VMware virtualization product than VMware player already installed. The client may not work then. If you have an old version of VMware player installed be aware that the client updates this install to a newer version. In all cases with VMware player installed the client changes the network configuration (the IP address) of the virtual host-only network adapter.
